The drive out to the cabin with Thea in the car is awkward. Neither of us speaks, and when I pull up in front of the building, Thea appears nervous.

“Hey, if you don’t want to talk, we can just eat, and I’ll take you back into town.”

“I’m so sorry. There are a million things I want to say, but I don’t know where to start. I’ve thought about this so many times.”

“About what?”

“About what I would say to you. How you would react.” She sighs and twists her hands in her lap. “But now you’re here, I don’t know what to say.”

“How about you come inside, we eat, and in between stuffing our faces, you tell me about your life.”

Thea huffs out a laugh. “I can do that.”

We open our doors, and I lead the way into the cabin. The Chinese smells good. I put it on the bench in the kitchenette and open a cupboard to find bowls. Thea opens a drawer and pulls out spoons and forks. The tension between us feels as though it’s subsided for now.

“Where are we eating?”

“Ahh… come with me.”

The sun is low in the sky when I lead her through the bedroom and out to the deck. I put the Chinese and the bowls on a small table.

Turning, Thea is standing in the doorway, her hand to her chest. She’s bathed in the last rays of the day, giving her an ethereal appearance.

“It’s beautiful.”

Staring at her, I say, “Yeah, it is.”

She steps out onto the deck and sits in a chair. “Do you have anything to drink?”

“Damn. I knew I’d forget something. Water?”

She giggles. “Water is fine.”

Walking back inside, I open the small bar refrigerator and pull out two bottles of water.

A knock sounds on the front door, and I open it.

“Hi! Sorry to bother you. I’m Kat, Dane’s wife.” She thrusts a bottle of wine at me. “He was supposed to put this in your mini bar, but he forgot.” She tilts her head from side to side. “Sorry.”

I take the wine out of her hands. “Ahh… you know I’m not a paying guest?”

Kat chuckles. “I know. You’re front-page news, I know about you, and Destiny is a friend.”

“Renny, what’s keeping you?” Thea asks as she walks toward us.

“Me! Sorry. I’m just dropping off a bottle of wine. I hope white is okay?”

“Oh my God! You’re Katarina Saunders,” shrieks Thea.

Kat holds out her hands in front of her. “Just Kat.”

Thea pushes past me. “Kat? You said I can call you Kat?” Thea glances at me. “I can call her Kat.”

Frowning, I push Thea slightly back. “Yep, I heard her. Kat, would you like to come in? We’ve got enough for a small army.”

Kat stares back toward the main house. “Maybe for a minute?”

Thea stumbles backward as Kat moves through the cabin and out to the back deck. Thea’s eyes are as big as saucers, and her mouth is open.

“Why don’t you join Kat, and I’ll get another bowl and fork for our guest.
